Our Food 1200

Scroll down

In recent years the UK has seen food supply is not secure, and a reliable, affordable supply is essential for all – including cities, Valleys, and rural areas. The ‘Our Food 1200’ initiative in South East and Central Wales aims to achieve this while cutting carbon emissions and restoring nature. Increasing food production in Wales will create jobs, new supply chains, and fair pricing for farms. This effort will also help protect against sudden price rises and supply failures, addressing vulnerabilities such as climate change, biodiversity loss, extreme weather, and resource shortages.

Our Food 1200

Our Food 1200 emerged from online conversations about local food during Covid, supported by the Conservation Farming Trust. Established as a community benefit society in 2022, Our Food 1200 provides local leadership to rebuild the local food economy. The two organizations work together, accessing funds and implementing work according to their different constitutions. Our Food 1200 aims for large-scale change by growing 1200 acres of agroecological fruit and vegetables for local markets, a target sufficient to trigger a recovery of the local food economy.

Vision for a secure future

The project has several goals, including developing locally owned supply chains to new and local markets and creating new opportunities for all farms in the region. Successes so far include:

  • Building affordable small farms for a new generation of farmers
  • Creating affordable farm pilots
  • Establishing a Farmland Trust and buying land for community ownership, developing it as small farms with homes
  • Revising planning guidelines
  • Leasing farmland
  • Recruiting new farmers

Our Food 1200 seeks Welsh Government policy support to expand local market growing and create new local supply chains for cities, Valleys, and rural areas. This ambitious project is essential for building a resilient food supply, creating jobs, and ensuring fair pricing while addressing the broader challenges of climate change and food security.

Has the rain reached you yet? 🌧️

A change in the weather is making its way across our National Parks. And with it comes a different rhythm to the landscape - changing how our surroundings look, sound and feel.

The sound of rain. The smell of wet earth. The air feeling fresher. Wildlife finding shelter.

What do you notice most when the rain arrives?

Just goats being goats. 🐐

These incredible animals call the Valley of Rocks in @exmoornp home - scaling walls and cliffs, grazing on the rich meadows and, occasionally, blocking the roads!

They’re a wonderful reminder of why our National Parks are so important, providing a home for such a diverse range of wildlife.

Have you ever spotted one?

Look out for us at the cinema. 🎬🌳

Our latest Wild Spaces episode, screening before selected films, takes you to Northumberland National Park. Their team, alongside farmers, landowners and volunteers, is working together to create healthier, more resilient landscapes through woodland creation and hedgerow planting.

It’s a story of partnership, long-term thinking, and the small actions that can have a lasting impact.

💭You might have heard of peatland, but what exactly is it and why does it matter so much?

Peatlands are our natural climate allies. They store vast amounts of carbon, support rare wildlife, improve water quality, reduce flood risk and preserve thousands of years of archaeological and cultural history.

Some of the UK's most important peatlands are found within our National Parks, making them critical places for tackling the climate and nature crises.

Across the UK's National Parks, peatland restoration projects are helping damaged peatlands recover, benefiting both nature and people.
