Connecting people with nature for their health and well-being is just as important today as it was 75 years ago when the National Parks were first conceived. Today the fifteen UK National Parks are visited over 100 million times each year. They are spaces in which we exercise, connect, and enjoy nature; bringing benefits to our physical and mental health.
But we know that for many, it’s not so easy to access these iconic landscapes. We need more facilities, accessible routes, transport, and information to enable people to fully explore and enjoy the National Parks.
Nearly a quarter of the UK’s population live with a disability or long term health condition for example, yet they make up just 10% of National Parks visitors. Groups including young people, the elderly, and families are also more likely to struggle to get outdoors.
Everyone deserves to have access to nature – and we need your help to enable this.

This is a great example of the type of project we hope to support through our Active Partnerships and are looking to deliver across the UK National Parks, working with national level corporate partners.
UK National Parks and Forest Holidays work together on ‘National Park Futures’, a 5-year programme designed to connect over 20,000 young people with nature. The aim is to inspire the next generation to care for and protect our precious National Parks, as well as improving their well-being through time spent in nature.
We understand the power of nature and know that outside play is fundamental to young people. Here are three of the projects that Forest Holidays is funding to connect young people with nature:
