My name is Imogen Dow, and I’m currently undertaking a rural surveying work placement at the Peak District National Park as part of my studies at Harper Adams University.  I began my year-long placement in July, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Peak District. Split primarily between the National Park’s two primary estates – Stanage-North Lees and Warslow—I’ve tackled a variety of unique challenges. From welcoming a new tenant into one of our farms to grant applications and hedgerow surveys, no two days have been alike. This mix of responsibilities has made my placement incredibly rewarding, providing me with invaluable hands-on experience that has significantly expanded my knowledge and skill set.

Sentimentally, the Warslow Estate, with its rolling hills and quilt-like patchwork of fields, immediately reminded me of my hometown in the Yorkshire Dales. It was a welcome sight, offering a sense of comfort and familiarity, especially since I’d only just moved to Derbyshire days before the start of my placement. However, it wasn’t just the landscape that brought me ease—it was the people. I’ve had the privilege of being guided by exceptional mentors and supported by a team of professionals whose expertise has been nothing short of inspiring. It has made my time at the National Park so far, not just enriching, but genuinely unforgettable; I look forward to what other opportunities the remainder of my placement will bring!
